My Swiss Army Knife

My Swiss army knife is one my most ultimate possessions that I own, because it is a heirloom. My grandpa passed it on to me but he died, and it is considered a taonga by my family.

The knife is a red genuine Victorinox pocket multi tool. The tool includes scissors, pliers, a big blade, a small blade, a can opener, a bottle opener, a multi purpose hook, a punch, a toothpick, tweezers and a cork screw. It also has my grandpas initials and my name on it, and the Victorinox emblem. It helps me everyday.

The army knife was brought in Switzerland by my mum. She brought it for my Grandpa Bob. When Bob died in 2009 my Grandma kept it for it a year. In 2010 she gave it to me on my birthday. There is a tradition in our family that when one of the boys turns 10, he gets a army knife.

So this is why my army knife is so special to me!

Teddy Bear

My nana brought me a little teddy bear. It’s special to me because she gave it to me when I was born.

It has a navy blue hat, white body, black eyes and a black nose. It’s about 36 cm tall and on its left foot it says 2000. This is because I was born in the year 2000.

The bear is special to me because my nana passed away and I miss her. It reminds me of her when I look at it. Maybe one day I will pass it down to my kids.

My Fairy Jewellery Box

At home I have got a fairy box and it is very special to me.
My jewellery box has a little fairy on the lid. The bottom is shaped as a star. The jewellery box is blue and white and it is quite small.

My jewellery box is important to me because it is from my nana and koro. They gave it to me for my 8th birthday. It’s also very special to me because it was my last birthday with my nana because my nana had passed away.

Every time I look at my jewellery box it reminds me of when my nana was still alive.

My Old Tiara

My Anutie lo gave me an old and special tiara. She gave it to me for my birthday this year.

My tiara is made of silver and has diamonds. It is is about 80 years old. The tiara is 8cm tall and 12cm long. It looks old and is a little bit rusty.

The tiara came from my father’s side of the family and this is why it reminds me of them. It especiclly reminds me of my anutie lo because she wore at her wedding.

It is special to me because it is old and breakable. It is already broken.

Even though it is old and already broken, my tiara is still special to me because it is part of my family history!

Keanu's special teddy

My mum gave me a teddy bear when I was born. It is very special to me. Her name is Gracie.

She kind of looks like Bob Marley without the dreads. She is brown with black eyes. She was fluffy until I kept on playing with her. She is about 20cm tall.

My mum got it for me when a lady came to my mum’s work,Westpac and gave it to her. She is about 11yrs old.

It is a taonga to me because my mum gave it to me when I was born. I have loved it ever since.

It is very special and it always will be.

My Pounamu

I got my Pounamu in the South Island. It is a special treasure to me.

Pounamu is the Maori word for greenstone. I have a koru and it symbolises new life and growth. My pounamu is about 4cm wide and high.

My pounamu came from the South Island. I got it in Hokitika but the actual stone comes from a river in Marsden which is just below Greymouth.

My greenstone is really special to me because it reminds me of my family holiday in the South Island.

My pounamu is really close to me and I wouldn’t give it up for anything.

The Whale's Tooth

When poor people were in Fiji, they used something commonly know to the Fijian people called a Whale’s tooth. It is special because it got people things they didn’t have when it was presented to them.

These special whales teeth are like any normal tooth. They have a thick short rope attached to the whale tooth so you can hold it. The teeth are usually white but can come in light green as well. The teeth come in all different sizes. A whale’s tooth is hollow but has nothing that goes on top of the tooth and it looks like it’s carved.

In the olden days, in Fiji, there had been a tradition to kill a whale and take a tooth out. It belonged to the people of Fiji and came from the Fijian Islands. When Fijians were poor they got a whale tooth and presented it to someone. When the poor presented it to someone, they would give some of their money away to the people who presented the whale tooth.

The whale’s tooth is special because it got the poor families their needs. Another reason why it’s special is because when someone wanted to marry someone they would present the whale tooth to them and they would say yes. Fijians liked to use the whale’s tooth because it meant so much to them and their lives.

My Taonga

I have a special pounamu necklace. My nana and poppa gave me the pounamu for my baptism.

Pounamu means greenstone in Maori. My taonga is in the shape of a mere, that means that it is shaped like a club or a stick.

I wasn’t allowed to wear my pounamy until I was 9 months old. This is because I could have choked. After that I never took it off. But when I was three it got to small and I haven’t worn it since.

My pounamu is special to me because it reminds me of my nana and poppa and my baptism.

My Heart Locket

My Heart Locket

My heart locket is special to me because my old best friend Lily Linford gave it to me. It reminds me of my grandma. It looks old fashioned, but I only got it last year for my ninth birthday.

My heart locket is white with roses in all different shades of pink and purple. I’m never going to throw it away or give it to anyone else, but when I die, if I can find it, I will pass it onto my children (if I have any),who will pass it down again.

Lily gave it to me to keep, so I stored it in my treasure box in my room. I love it so much. It’s very pretty. I think it was made in China or England, but it’s so small, about the size of Smiggle heart eraser.

It’s so special to me and I’m going to keep it till I’m old.

Thank you for reading.

Emily's Taonga Explanation

My Lollie Bag

My lollie bag is small and special. It was given to me when I was little.

My lollie bag is a small square shape. It’s pink with small different coloured
hearts all over it. In the bottom right hand corner there is a purple E and
that is the first letter of my name

My lollie bag is special to me because it was given to me from my great nan
who is my dad’s nan. My great nan died quite a long time ago. Another reason that the lollie bag is special to me is because it reminds me of my great nan.

I was three or four when I got given my lollie bag. My great nan made/sewed one for the kids in my family because every time we went to visit my great nan she gave us lollies so she made us those lollie bags.

My lollie bag is very special and means a lot to me and I will look after it forever.

Leaves!

Leaves!

Everywhere.

Gently floating

Down from the branch.

Brown, green, red and purple

Are the colours that I see

Heading to the ground.

Finlay

Leaves!
Leaves!
Drop like a feather
Onto the soft winter’s grass.
Gently tumbling across
Other bright autumn leaves.
Delicately clinging to life.
Risias

Leaves!
Leaves!
In the trees
falling down
around my knees,
Losing my keys.
Help?
Getting buried by the leaves.
Goodbye world?
PEEKABOO!
Bailey

Leaves!

Leaves!
Swooping off the trees.
Crashing to the ground.
Crinkly, wrinkly
Old leaves.
Autumn has come,
their time is done.
