My Taonga

I have a special pounamu necklace. My nana and poppa gave me the pounamu for my baptism.

Pounamu means greenstone in Maori. My taonga is in the shape of a mere, that means that it is shaped like a club or a stick.

I wasn’t allowed to wear my pounamy until I was 9 months old. This is because I could have choked. After that I never took it off. But when I was three it got to small and I haven’t worn it since.

My pounamu is special to me because it reminds me of my nana and poppa and my baptism.
